About eBee
You never know where life will lead you - 28 years ago we bought a 60 acre farm as Glenn wanted to start an apple orchard. After planting these trees, he noticed there were no honey bees. So Glenn decided to take up beekeeping. That was 27 years ago and today little did we know that this would become our full time business and passion.
Prior to this Glenn achieved a doctorate degree in Organic Chemistry and I have a degree in Biology. So prior to becoming full time beekeepers, Glenn was a chemist for years and I worked in the pharmaceutical field for 20 years.
Glenn became tired of driving so much for his work and we both decided any children we had we wanted them to enjoy growing up with nature. We wanted to have our children appreciate the beauty around them and to take care of the land. So Glenn started beekeeping full time, I eventually joined him full time and today we look back and think you never know where life will lead you.
We now own 200 acres filled with alfalfa, clover, basswood trees, locust trees, you name it as our land is planted for the bees and wildlife in mind. We have planted 20 acres specifically in white and yellow clover for the bees. The majority of our property is undisturbed and not farmed allowing the bees and wildlife to naturally forage. We have natural springs, a lake, and creeks, so plenty of water to help the bees in the hot summer months.
Over the years, Glenn has been given awards for his Conservation efforts and being a Steward of the Land. In 1990 he was given an award for "Conservation/Habitat Enhancement" for his efforts at converting our local closed landfill in Ashland County, OH into a native grassland prairie, with watchable wildlife. This involved writing the grants, many endless nights and weekends of planting and converting the landfill into what it has become today - this park is now known as Byers Woods.
Throughout the 1990's and early 2000's - Glenn volunteered for Pheasants Forever and planted thousands of acres for residents of Ashland County into habitat suitable for a variety of wildlife. Planting all this acreage peaked his interest in bees and the vital role they play for all of us.
Glenn started noticing less and less honey bees in our orchard and frankly many areas he planted. When we were kids, bees were everywhere, so he became interested in beekeeping and it soon became his full time passion. Beekeeping is hard heavy work. However, watching bees at work is extraordinary and quite relaxing.
Watching our bees in action on a warm sunny day while walking around our property trying to determine what they are drawn to is fun and enjoyable. Each year the taste of our honey varieties differs depending on what plants are producing the best pollen and nectar sources that particular year. To achieve different honey varieties we have to continue to pull honey supers off the hives after specific floral blooms, i.e, basswood, clover, goldenrod, etc.
We have various beeyards and they all can produce different tasting honey varieties during the same season simply based on rainfall amount, other nectar sources blooming at the same time, etc.
About our farm:
Our farm is located in Ashland County, OH with more property in Huron County, OH. We've been in the honey business for over 25 years now with our website being created in early 2000. I created our first website by coding everything by hand, today with software it's a bit easier.
We both pack orders and all honey is filled by hand - no machines are used anywhere in the filling process! We do not have a physical store and all of our business is conducted online. This allows us time to maintain our beehives to produce honey and bee products.
Glenn is typically out checking on the hives, catching bee swarms, planting trees, pruning apple trees, and extracting honey. We extract honey throughout the year (late Spring through late Fall) to get the various types of honey. Honey Bees are truly amazing creatures and everyone should do a little research on the benefit that they provide to all of us.
Also, take up your passion as you never know where life with lead you! Get outside, sit back and watch nature around you - it truly is an incredible world we all live in.
